Empowering People, Unlocking Potential…It’s What Barbara Does

My goal is to help people expand their awareness of what is possible for them,” says Barbara Adler, a Managing Consultant at IMPACT Group. She leads Women in Leadership™ and Leaders of Tomorrow talent development programs to advance the careers of her clients. Her days are filled with coaching women and men to hone their leadership skills, set stretch goals for themselves, and drive growth at their companies.

Barbara grew up in Boston. After teaching English in Israel for one year, she moved to New York City then Philadelphia. “From my experience in those cities, I realized that I liked my home town of Boston best.” She moved back to Massachusetts and completed a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology, taking a job as a therapist at a community mental health center.

“Later I advised students about career options and alternative career paths. A friend connected me with an opportunity at an outplacement firm to provide job search coaching,” she comments. “Now I focus on leadership coaching. I enjoy empowering people to develop and grow in their roles.” Barbara is a Career Management Fellow and Board Certified Coach who works with a broad range of professionals. She especially enjoys working with women to advance their careers.

“Support and encouragement from an external coach helps women believe in themselves,” says Barbara. “We focus on my clients’ careers during our coaching sessions, but the new skills they develop are often applicable to other areas of their life.” For instance, Barbara worked with a client to help her recognize that when she had a project idea that would improve operations, she felt she had to implement it herself. Barbara coached her on ways to let her colleagues provide valuable information and perspective. This advice helped Barbara’s client to view situations at home in a different light also. She began delegating responsibilities to her children and allowing them to provide input where they could.

To unlock a person’s potential, Barbara believes you must listen with an open heart. “I strive to create a safe space for a person to explore their thoughts, talk about their ideas, and gain a new perspective on what they want to do with their career.” She advises her clients to keep an open mind, try new things, and evaluate what works and what doesn’t work for them. “This is so helpful for managing a current situation or setting long-term goals.” Barbara excels at helping clients increase their self-awareness and analyze their management style. One client referred to Barbara as “an amazing force of positive influence” during the process.

Barbara lives in a small town on the Gulf Coast just outside Tampa, Florida. The picturesque scenery around her provides ample opportunities for her to use her camera. “I like to take pictures that focus on the beauty in our everyday world.” As a hobby photographer, Barbara sees simple things in a unique way.
